A Conversation for The Films of the Coen Brothers

Steve K.

A good entry, I really enjoy the Coen Bros. films, having become jaded with most of the rest.

I think the soundtrack from "O, Brother" not only won the Grammy for best album of the year, but also the Country Music Association award for best album. How often does that happen? I also read that the writer of the opening field chant (with the breaking rocks - I thought I had a defective CD at first), who was in jail when he wrote it decades ago, was owed royalties from the movie. They finally found him, age ~80 and living with family, and gave him his first check. When he heard the album beat out Michael Jackson (among others) for the Grammy, he said "Tell Michael to try and keep up." smiley - ok

The DVD of "O, Brother" has a great "Making of" segment. E.g. the movie was to have a dust bowl, almost sepia look. When the director of photography was told they would shoot in Mississippi in June, he said "It'll look like Ireland!" The scenes were shot as they appeared, no sepia filters or anything, then the whole thing was digitized for color adjustment, then back to film for theatrical release. I got the impression this was a first. smiley - magic

Sounds like Steve Buscemi's nickname should be "Mr. Bill" smiley - injured
