The microscope chappies I worked with called NSOMs SNOMs. I assume that was just for ease of saying, as they used the same long version words, just in a different order.
Other than that, very interesting, fills in some of the gaps from watching Jamie fiddle with the things.

NSOMs are widely called SNOMs, but the chappies I work with and the literature obviously prefers NSOM. I don't know why. Someone told me SNOM means something NASTY in some language, but (as a polyglot myself) I don't think that's a reason...
