We moved into our house 3 years ago. Fortunately we didn't have to carry lots of things (rule#1: Throw away everything that hasn't been touched for more than 12 months 
), and the distance was only some 500 yards. But most of your advice is valid even for the shortest distances. I have quite decent an experience in packing cars, vans, trucks, etc. ... The most important thing to keep in mind is that *THE LOAD MUST NOT MOVE*. You pointed that out quite clearly.
