...the Roasting Swan was sung by a counter-tenor. He brought the house down. I have no evidence for this, but it wouldn't surprise me if that number was written with a counter-tenor in mind. It suits the voice perfectly.

It is certainly pitched so high that falsetto is required for the highest notes (it goes up to high D).

I've only ever seen/heard this sung by a counter tenor. I wonder what the going rate is for 50 minutes staring at the audience and 5 minutes singing?

There are lots like that. Prokofiev's 'Alexander Nevsky' for example has one solo aria (Mezzo) lasting about five minutes, all the rest is chorus and orchestra.
