I don't think old Ollie Cromwell would feature on the Top 10 greatest Irishmen list, that's for sure. Have you been over to Ireland?

~~Insomniac.Vampire~~ Posted Apr 22, 2003

Galway is a great city - it doesn't really feel like a big city at all, as a matter of fact. I am living in Cork in the "deep south". Roy Keane country and all that...

hi again,
sorry ive been working on my page only just noticed your msg lol
i Galway and your right its nothing like a city! my family are right in the sticks, ive an aunt in the middle of nowhere (next to cashel bay) and another aunt and uncle up a mountain, its great because you can just lose track of time for a few weeks! brill
think we've driven through cork years ago but i cant remember it now, isnt it where all the fruit is? (jam making)

Woodpigeon Posted Apr 22, 2003
I'm a big fan of Connemara, so it sounds as if your relatives are living in a great part of the country! Can't say that jam making rings a bell here - cheese and stout maybe. You might be thinking of Wexford, where kids sell strawberries on the side of the road during May and June? Yum!

yep there smack bang in the middle of connemara, and the 12 bens i think you are right i must be thinking of wexford lol

Woodpigeon Posted Apr 22, 2003
No traffic jams there in Connemara, apart from the kamikase sheep! The way they try so badly to get knocked down by cars is so impressive god that's one lovely place. Wish I was there now!
Time to go.. I promised myself I would get to bed early for once! (Oh bugger - still have the bottles to do... )

~~Insomniac.Vampire~~ Posted Apr 22, 2003

Woodpigeon Posted Apr 23, 2003
Yep thanks for the tip - quite a head on me this morning. As if it was 100lb in weight! I get about 3 or 4 colds a year. Is that exceptional?

i dont know depends,im always suffering from allergies which makes my asthma worse but when im in Ireland i always seem to be fit as a fiddle!
i remember my mum telling me when she was at school (in connemara) she used to know a boy who was always sick, his family emmigrated to the states,he wrote back to family after said he never got sick anymore! so probably something to do with where you live/whats around you....i live in the big smog! lmao or should that be smoke

Right old hypochondriacs the lot of us! I saw a good programme on the Irish who went to England during the 1950's a few nights ago. Things were particularly cr*p here at that time, and thousands left the country - practically a whole generation. The people who were interviewed on the programme were from Connemara, and many of them could not speak English when they went over to London. It was really fascinating. I should have added that to my entry, come to think of it - or did I already? Must check!

heres something else for your entry.....
my mum told me when she was a little girl back in the late 40's /early 50's the children in connemara were told they were not allowed to talk Irish! the parents were even payed to make there children talk english! (by local authoritys or government not sure who, have to ask her again).they did talk Irish at home but my Granny told them off if they was found to be talking Irish they wouldnt get the payment! then somewhere along the line (sorry my memorys ) they was told to only speak Irish lol so when my mum came over here at about 21 people thought she was a bit slow but she'd be there trying to translate english back to Irish to reply but then figuring out the english!!!!! if you know what i mean????? lmao
anyway ill have to catch you later im off in 5

Woodpigeon Posted Apr 23, 2003
That's quite a story! I know a small amount of Irish, and it is soo different to English. You even *think* differently when you are thinking in Irish.
See you soon!

~~Insomniac.Vampire~~ Posted Apr 23, 2003
well they do say there a bit 'different' in connemara dont they lol whenever i go back im convinced they havnt caught up with the rest of the world,i think theyre definately still in the last century with some of their views, some of the things my aunts come out with have me in stitches and there not trying to be funny! im not trying to offend you im only talking about my experiences and some of the people in connemara especially my family!
but that said i the layed back stress free attitude they have toward eveything and its always great going over, my best memorys are there

Whew - late! And, yet again more bottles to do!
Quite alright - actually the idea of you sniggering in front of your relatives is quite funny to me! I'm pretty out of step with "official" Ireland myself - ie not a regular church-goer, don't play GAA, rugby or golf, not a member of a political party. God my future will be tough here won't it ! I just love nature and scenery and stuff, and I think Connemara has it in abundance.
Take it easy, and talk to you soon!
