Apple were pretty clear about the reason: it offered the quickest and most reliable way to deliver a proper multi-tasking OS. OS9 and below can multi-thread, but OS X has full pre-emptive multi tasking. They tried BeOS and found it too difficult to fit to the Mac environment, hence OS X.
