There was a significant planetary conjunction around the time of Jesus' birth. I found it once by dabbling on an 'astronomy guide' I picked up cheap in Woolworths. Can't remember exact details but it did fit the so-called facts re dates etc.
On the other hand the star could of course be merely an emblem on a stick at the head of a procession such as the 'wise men' are carrying
around from door to door at the moment on their anuual Caritas charity thing. I tend to favour my 2nd theory.
