The story of the whaleship Essex was on tv last night (Moby Dick). It was kinda gruesome, and they seemed to focus quite strongly on the whole cannibalism thing...

I didn't care very much for the way it was handled on TV to be honest.
They were obviously using Philbrick's excellent 'In the Heart of the Sea' as the basis of their piece, but were to cheap to get him involved.
I felt they denied the humanity of most of the men involved by not even naming them, and over exaggerated the effects on the men themselves, by failing to point out how soon most of them went back to sea.
And their is no evidence at all about Coffin's mothers attitude to Pollard. She *is* known to have told a visitor that "We do not speak of the matter" but that probably indicated the reaction of the community as a whole not wanting to rake up old bones.

Interesting...

Well I wasn't watching closely enough to pick up on those details (it was kinda on in the background). Had some nice helicopter footage though... I think it was shot in Iceland.

In the background was probably the best place for it, I'm afraid.smiley - blue
