"Today (30TH sEPTEMBER, 2011) is the 129th birthday of Hans Geiger, the German scientist and inventor of the radiation-detecting Geiger counter.
But people often don't realise he is also Geiger of the Geiger-Marsden experiment that, under the supervision of Ernest Rutherford, discovered the true structure of the atom. Rutherford published his landmark paper on this in 1911 - which is one reason behind 2011 being the International Year of Chemistry.
P.S. Did you know it took Geiger many years to get his eponymous counter working - then one day it just clicked..."
