Well, I only noticed this article after it was submitted, but I hope I can grab the sub's attention and ask a quick question - shouldn't a mention of Steve Grand's book, 'Creation: Life and How to Make It' be in order regarding the original Creatures? It explains in some detail how he created Creatures, and its limitations as an artificial lifeform. The ISBN is 0297643916.

Thankyou! I went out and bought the book after spotting your mention of it (and reading the reviews on Amazon, of course
