It surprises me that something that has such a short lifespan is so intelligent. Most of the really intelligent animals - great apes, elephants, ravens & crows, parrots, dolphins and of course us - tend to have quite long lifespans.

I would tend to agree, but I do remember reading that scientists have tested octopus with mazes and so on. I suppose it depends on definition of raw intelligence versus learning over time?
newborn infants are intelligent - they just get cleverer with experience?
