I am tracing some family, and have found my fathers uncle was Bill Monk who was head brewer at the state brewary. If anyone can give me any information I would be very grateful. [email protected]

Hi, I'm the original author of this piece, but unfortunately I haven't a clue how you'd go about finding out anything about ex-employees of the brewery.
The only thoughts I had would be to try either Carlisle Museum, Tullie House, Castle St., Carlisle or the local newspaper (http://www.cumberland-news.co.uk/default.aspx) to see if they've got anything on your great-uncle in their archives.

Hmmm... A quick google though and I did come up with something quite interesting...
A reference to the Derwent Brewery, Silloth...
http://www.quaffale.org.uk/php/brewery/89 (Address is on the page)
Now, I've found references to a few of their beers, among which are Bill Monks 4.3%
Carlisle State 3.7%
Carlisle State Export 4.7%
You could try contacting them, presumably, if they've named beers after both Bill Monks and the State Brewery, they might have more information on both...
Good luck
