I know that Richmond was originally Surrey, that Tottenham was originally Middlesex, and that Illford was Essex - so what county would the Square Mile have been in before it was considered of great enough importance to not be in any of them?

Asked this in the ask h2g2 page, and it turned out that London has pretty much been on its own since before counties were invented. Apparently it used to be in the Kingdom of Kent, back in the days when it was Wessex, Mercia, Kent, etc, etc
