I thought that I heard that Pret are now owned by McDonalds. Has anyone else heard this? Their website says that they're privately owned. Maybe it's just an urban myth...

It's part true. They own a minority stake for US operations, and are helping the US operations to find suppliers.
Whether that's a good or a bad thing, no comment

Ah, that would help to explain why we now have four locations sprung up so quickly here in New York, including one a few blocks from the Stock Exchange. McDonald's is renowned for having software for picking good locations and the sheer bulk to get them.
