Wellington boots?

"..the flipper, the Wellington boot. All these apparently designed to inflict as much pain upon the wearer as possible, rather than provide comfort or support for the foot."

so flippers and wellington boots defy purpose, and are designed to inflict as much pain upon the wearer as possible?

Even platforms and stilettos are not designed to inflict pain. Believe it or not, many women actually go out of their way to wear them, and they can be considered forms of "power dressing"
