Worth mentioning here was the burdening number of games that started to simulate real world physics, eg mortar rounds that arced over hills. Hills and ridges that phyically obstructed laser fire.
And a mention perhaps to Total Annihilation, the first (I think) 3D RTS to use actually polygons in a 3D environment rather then just bit mapped pictures.
All ground breaking, and all rather important for the bag under my eyes
