A Conversation for Costumed Character Etiquette

I worked as a photographer for a holiday camp back in 1994-1995. One of the tasks was to follow the person in costume round the site in the early evening taking happy pictures of families enjoying themselves with the cuddly animal. the photos being sold to the campers the next day. Sometimes it was yours truly inside the costume, and it was really worth it when the kids believed that the parrot etc was real (course it was!) and they went away buzzing.

What got on your nerves was the drunk(s) who would come over, scatter the kids, jump on the costumee, place them in a head lock, shout "AaaaaHAAAAA" closely followed by a shouted invitation to undertake the sort of activity that should not be carried out while one participant is wearing car seat covers. The drunk then tries to steal one part of the costume, often accompanied by a ripping sound before running off laughing. Repeat a number of times until the photographer and the costumee are pretty miffed.

Despite the minority, it was still a lot of fun and almost made you forget the poor wages and squalid accomodation.
