Seems obvious, but a lot of people don't
most uni's hold open days when you can go, see the uni, the halls, talk to lecturers and students about stuff, which gives a much better idea of a place than any prospectus.
Also - in the case of highly publicised unis (Oxford, Cambridge, my own beloved St Andrews currently) do NOT take all the press at face value - bear in mind that half the time people don't know in depth about what they're talking about, and a lot just want to paint a specific picture, however inaccurate..
