The first use of text as a medium for drawing is not Lewis Carroll in 1865. Much earlier is the Jewish art of micrography in the 13th century, using hebrew text to creat embelishment to sacred texts. There are many examples on the www of this artform, examples are held in the John Ryland library in manchester; see

and there is a further exhibit from the United States virtual Library of Congress.
