Everyone I know who isn't Irish who has heard of this character has done so for the same reason - the excellent graphical adventure games Tir Na Nog and Dun Darach, released in the mid eighties for the ZX Spectrum by Gargoyle Games.

Cool - and it's funny that I've never heard of the games!
I got into Celtic mythology by going through a phase a couple years ago of reading far too many fantasy novels.

Tír na nÓg is another old Irish legend, but it didn't come into the Cúchulainn stories at all. It was part of the Finn McCool series.
