Debian

Interesting the article fails to even mention Debian GNU/Linux, from which Ubuntu descended.

Debian is only slightly more difficult to install, and significantly more stable. Much, much more stable.

Many consider Debian one of the three 'giants' of Linux, the other two being Slackware and Red Hat

~~~
Debian always has three releases available: Stable, Testing, and Unstable.
These are typically named according to characters from the animated classic, 'Toy Story'. The current Stable, aka Debian v. 5, is Lenny, Testing is Squeeze, and Unstable is Sid. Sid is always unstable smiley - weird
Since the focus is on reliability rather than marketing, Debian's release cycle is longer than Ubuntu's, so the packages in Stable are not as 'bleeding edge' as the corresponding ones in Ubuntu, and don't tend to break quite as often.
Squeeze is due to become the new stable quite soon.
