If it were possible to show that the shroud was a fake, scientifically, beyond all reasonable doubt, it still would not be sufficient to overcome 'belief'.
After all, to sign up to religion you have to have a 'belief'. A suspension of reality, become part of the mystery.
So the rest of us should back off, nod and agree with the believers and make up our own minds as to its origins.
Look - I've got these rusty nails, the guy swears they are the real thing......
