What you have to remember is Tom is very good at making the most of having an audience. The facts are, he threatened to resign (as he'd doen repeatedly over the previous two years or so), the new producer said 'fine, we'll replace you' and Tom regretted being so rash soon after. He wasn't sacked though, if that's what you're suggesting. He and the producer worked together on his announcement and even jointly came up with the joke about casting a woman just to wind up the Press.
