Excellent article!
Got my attention because of the link to Metallica, who have a long history with Morricones' work.
Metallica has used "The Ecstasy of Gold" as the introductory music for its concerts since 1983, and a special version was played by the San Fransisco Symphony and Michael Kaymen for the Symphony & Metallica live show, which resulted in the album "S&M".
They recorded a cover version in their own right, which appears on the 2007 Morricone tribute album "We All Love Ennio Morricone". This version was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
One of my favourite peices of music by a long way .

Similarily "The Fields of the Nephilim" used some of the soundtrack from Once Upon a Time in the West, (The Harmonica man) as did a more recent tune called something like "Dub be good to me".
