h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

The original cardboard milk caps were still going strong in the early 1950's - at least to customers of Finley's Dairy in Rush, NY, USA. In the winter we would find these items on top of columns of frozen milk extending from the necks of glass milk bottles - since milk, being mostly water, expands when it freezes (in Summer, they stayed where they belonged). Milk was delivered early and left on the porch to freeze unless you looked slippy and got out to pick it up before daylight. I don't remember any of us doing anything in particular with these caps, though. They were just one of those things you found along the road along with ciggie butts and soda pop bottle caps and empty matchbooks. And the shards of broken dreams...
