Some scienticts say that electrons can fill the orbitalas in the following order:1s2,2s2,2p6,3s2,3p6,now 4s2 and again 3d10,4p6...Others say 1s2,2s2,2p6,3s2,3p6,3d10(instead of 4s2 as it is upper) 4s2,4p6,4d10,4f14...Iron has 26 electrons so its electronic configuration would be:1s2,2s2,2p6,3s2,3p6,4s2,3d6 according to the first example or 1s2,2s2,2p6,3s2,3p6,3d8 according to the second example.

The 1st example is correct the 4s orbital is filled before the 3d can be explained simpily as the 4s state having a lower energy than the 3d but is due to the solutions to the shrodinger equation and pertubations due to potential in an electric field
