I think this would probably be a good time to point out that beer is a type of ale, not the other way around, as this article seems to be suggesting. If it's a fermented beverage that contains grain of some kind, is not distilled and not fortified, then it's an ale.
Beer is an ale made with hops, grain sugar and water.
