As well as the Rover gas turbine-powered car, gas turbine-powered cars were entered in the Indy 500 in 1967 and 1968. They were well suited to the banked oval, as the long 'wind-up' time of the turbine mattered less at a venue where there were no sharp corners and few subsequent starts and stops.
Rover also entered gas-turbine cars in the 1963 and 1965 Le Mans 24hr races, finishing as high as 8th.
I also saw a programme recently that showed a gas turbine motorbike that does over 200mph, but that's just daft.
