A Conversation for The Jungfraujoch, Switzerland

Thank you for this entry. It brings back memories of a wonderful trip in 1973. I think the buildings at the top were very new at that time - replacing the previous lot which burnt down. The train ran on a "rack railway" system with a cog arrangement in the train working on a rack between the tracks thus providing much greater traction than conventional trains. To compensate for the increased angle of ascent /descent, the seats were angled. I recall an ice cave being developed. Is it still there?

The Jungfraujoch is my favourite part of Switzerland, and that's saying something, seeing as Switzerland is my favourite country
One of the outstanding memories from my childhood is sitting out on the veranda of a chalet, opposite the north face of the Jungfrau, watching a major storm build up and then strike. It was completely awesome - we were perfectly safe, but the entire valley was flooded. There was absolutely no sign of the caravan park that had been there, it was completely washed away. And during the storm, tiny little streams running down the Jungfrau turned into massive torrents.
Oh and watching the rescue and relief operations was quite an education too. The Swiss, as usual, are superbly organised in this. They even airlifted the cows out of flooded areas by suspending them beneath helicopters!
I've just read The White Spider, too. An awesome book... quite an astonishing tale.

There is a picture of the Jungfrau on my page outside H2G2, you can find the link on my space.
Yes the Bernese Alps are great especially the Junfrauregion.
Do you remeber which village you were staying Peregrin?
And yes the ice-caves are ready to be visited. It's very cold in there.
If you love ice-caves you could also go to the Rhône-Gletscher, this caes are much larger.
