wow...I just listened to a couple of Moreschi's recordings on the internet and it was honestly the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. I was nearly in tears just thinking about how great and seraphic the great castrati must have been. It's so beautiful...I really do love it, and I think it far superior to a woman's voice.
If it is true that this is practiced in India, I think it would be amazing to be able to find someone really good, and to get a recording of it.

At the risk of sounding heartless and barbaric, I wonder if there are any young boys who have been castrated for medical reasons or something who could be trained in music. But you'd still get the problem of having no one to train them properly.

I must have a look for those recordings myself!

I think that in the Western world, anyone who needs that kind of surgery will get hormone treatment, so the conditions of development wouldn't be the same as for the castrati.
