A Conversation for The Word 'Like'

There is a Newcastle usage that is a threatening phrase for example:
"Are you alright like?" means "Explain your behaviour or I shall be forced to engage you in fisticuffs"
"Is that right like?" means "Your explanation is found lacking, threfore I shall be forced to engage you in fisticuffs"

And a Dublin usage "What are you like?" which means something along the lines of "Have you no shame?".

In NE Scotland "Fit like?" is a greeting which can be translated as "How are you, old chap?". "Nae bad, yersel?" is the traditional response.

The word is also commonly used in Liverpool, England, where it is usually situated at the end of a sentence. For example: "You alright, like?". Among the local scallie population, the whole sentence may then be followed by either 'la' or 'girl' (i.e. "You alright, like, la/girl?").

Also, the phrase "What are you like?" is probably as common in Liverpool as it is in Dublin.

In Yorkshire, it is simply added to the end of every single sentence for no particular reason. Well, there is a reason I guess, it just seems like there isn't, lol...I suppose it sort of means "You know what I mean?" or "You with me so far?" lol
Okay, that's enough for me, like.

In Cork, Ireland, we also use like at the end of a sentence...

"He's over there like....that's great like....it's really warm today like"

But this and any of the other examples of Irish or UK usage of like seem more of a (unnecessary) habit and is not like the American version which is just a way of avoiding using your brain to communicate better. (And yes, the fact the we too are adopting this way of speaking does indeed mean that Americans are not the only ones guilty of primitive speech)!
