When I was growing up back in we said that an intellectual was a person who could listen to the William Tell Overture without thinking of the Lone Ranger, an American western TV show. (Later it was Lark cigarettes and Pizza Rolls - all three of which were in one memorable commercial). Now it Also Sprach Zarathustra and "2001". smiley - rocket

Gnomon - time to move on

Not exactly. You have to be an intellectual to sit through the whole of 2001 A Space Odyssey, so it is not quite in the same class as the Lone Ranger.

A lot of classical music is sold these days on the basis that it appeared in the TV ad for *****. (Fill in the product of your choice).

Right, and what the TV ads haven't usurped, the movies have, as in Disney's two "Fantasia's". It's hard to listen to some of that music without thinking of marching broomsticks, dancing hippos, floating demons, etc. Reminds me of a guy who said a girl ruined Emily Dickinson for him. She said any of Dickinson's poems could be sung to the tune of "Yellow Rose of Texas".

smiley - rose <--- should be yellow
