A second hand (c 1975ish) long wheelbase landrover will set you back about £1500. A further £500 will get you the spares and extra equipment you will need. This can be fitted out to sleep 4.
Route planning is done by going to the foreign office website and choosing the least dangerous countries. This changes frequently so be very flexible. Best to drive out to somewhere then sell the Landy and get plane tickets back to avoid backtracking.

At which point the Foreign Office website advised against proceeding to Northern Scotland I presume??

I had some friends who were going to do just that going overland to Tanzania. The problem was the best route avoiding troublespots would have been travelling along the black lines between countries
