Just ran across http://fr.arxiv.org/abs/math.AG/0312309 today ("The Collatz 3n+1 Conjecture Is Improvable"). Note that this does not mean I guarantee the paper is correct (well it didn't convince me, there).
Nevertheless, it shows that the Collatz conjecture is still a burning topic, isn't it? Now here's a few further related links taken from the above paper:
