It wasn't just the heat that caused the players problems. The majority of the matches were played well above sea-level where the thinner air not only made breathing far more difficult but also made the ball behave differently. Some teams, particularly those from South America realised that and utilized it. There were shots from long range with incredible speed which normally would have been saved zipping in.
