Very interesting article. I live just round the corner from what's left of Gosport Railway Station. It is now being redeveloped with flats, workshops etc. all incorporated into the existing structure. It's a pity it will never be a proper station again but it's better than being left to rot.

I was interested to read this article as I was stationed at St George Barracks in the 1970's with 20 Maritime Regiment RCT. The railway line in question ran behind the guardroom, and then crossed Weevil Lane to Clarence Yard. There was a short section of track preserved behind the guardroom outside what was then the sick bay, I was told at the time when I enquired about this track that it was where Queen Victoria rested overnight, under Guard on her final journey to London after she passed away on the Isle of Wight. Does anybody out there know if this was in fact the case?smiley - smiley

The piece of railway track is still in place behind the Guardhouse (which is now part of a Nursery). At the beginning of 2001, to mark the 100th Anniversary of Queen Victoria's death, a ceremony was held at Royal Clarence Yard, near to the spot where the coffin was brought ashore from the Royal Yacht. The coffin was then placed on board the Royal Train in the private station in Clarence Yard. The train then went to London but did not rest on that particular piece of track.
