I understamd that an article like this can never satisfy everybody, but it seems a little unfair to leave out the entire gamut of Italian Cinema, specially with the recent releases of Cinema Paradiso, Il Postino (The Postman)and La Vita E Bella (Life is Beautiful).
For me, these are the very standards of what I would call Moving Cinema, and in my personal (and humble) opinion, Shawshank Redemption, Titanic and the like fall far below par, when compared to these movies.
Those of you who havent still seen these movies, please do. And then, Sam, I fear this list may need a revision. Dont mean to be pompous about it, but these are truly Moving movies (!!), and to see them being missed on what ought to be a more global list is unfair.
Maybe others can help with more titles that have glossed over or missed out.
cheers, and thanks for a much needed list of movie recommendations...

i agree, the film that made me cry most was 'cinema paradiso'. Who can remain unmoved at the end when the adult Toto is watching the reel of spliced together 'kisses' censored by the village priest so many years ago that Alfredo (now dead) had saved for him ? It makes me cry every time.
