A Conversation for The Film that Moved You Most and Why

The Latin tag in 'Dead Poets Society' is 'Carpe Diem', NOT 'Dium'. And the title has no apostrophe.

Other than that, I'm just amazed that no one mentioned 'LA Confidential' and 'The Philadelphia Story'.

The impact of Star Wars Episode IV should never be underestimated. I remember sitting in a cinema when the film first opened. We hear the sound of laser fire and then a very big ship races into frame from overhead. It is firing busily behind. The pursuing ship starts to appear and we understand immediately that it is quite large. However, as more of the Star Destroyer comes into view, it soon becomes apparent that we have never seen anything like this before. The overhead positioning, the sound, the sheer scale of the thing. Truly a new era of Sci-Fi film-making.

Lars von Trier (Dancer in the Dark) is one of the Dogme directors, not the director of Dogma (which is an entirely different film by Kevin Smith)

I believe the French title for Betty Blue should be '37° 2 le matin'.

"The Professional" turns up on your best film list. This is just the american name for "Leon" which was already mentioned (a personal favourite of mine.)

Ah Leon, fantastic film!

Another point... I think there should be a "spoiler warning" at the top of this article. The entry on _Phenomenon_ actually gives away a *major* plot point and the very end of the film!

The Thin Red Line involves a battle around Guadalcanal, not Guadalajara. Your review got your guadals mixed!
And it WAS a terrific movie!

I think the corrected Betty Blue title is also wrong!

It should be '37° 2 le matin' i.e. "37 degrees 2 le matin", not "37.2 degrees au matin".

Unless dear dear Betty had a digital thermometer, which I don't quite recall playing a major part in the film. smiley - winkeye

Oh, and _Forrest Gump_ has 2 Rs in it.

Hmm... I seem to be descending into a pedantic rut this week.

Can I have a credit for my contribution of the 'Dancer in the Dark' section please (I'm not in the Referenced Researchers list).

Also, it does make sense to say 'Dogme director', even though he never directed a film called Dogme. The Dogme manifesto describes a method of filmmaking, and so directors who have signed up to this manifesto can be called a 'Dogme director' (I have seen the term used on blurbs to videos). It might be better to say 'directed by Lars Von Trier under the rules of the Dogme Manifesto...' however if the other one is unclear.

OK, I've added your credit, Frankie (sorry about that), changed the wording for Betty Blue and sorted out the 'r's in Forrest Gump! We refer to Lars von Trier as 'Dogme *movement* director'. I think the word movement makes it clear.

All the best,

Sam. smiley - smiley
