A brilliant book. One of my first choices if I'm feeling down and want to do a bit of comfort reading. Ever since I first read it when I was small I wanted to "farm" some part of my home-town. 
The BBC did a pretty faithful adaptation about 10 years ago (Trigger fron Only Fools and Horses was the dad) but sadly they never seem to have repeated it. Shame!

I *loved* the tv show They showed it twice as I saw it twice - but it only occured to me today to research it, and I found that it was based on a book...
