a girl called Ben

A Sudden Wild Magic is one of my favourite books.. I had no idea that DWJ was brought up during the war. I had assumed she was a baby boomer.

Hasnt she written books about magicians who are cats who guard the gates betwween the world?

Thank you for your entry. It was nice to find out more about her, and the books she has written

Gnomon - time to move on

The Chrestomanci series is about magicians who guard the gates between worlds. They are not cats, but they have an important cat-like feature (the title of one of the books gives it away).

I have read a couple of the Crestomanci books, and I *can* tell the difference between children and cats. smiley - winkeye

PS - I did at least read aBHoT from cover to cover, and more or less followed IT, though I couldn't paraphrase, precis or summarise it.

You may be thinking about some of Diane Duane's books about wizards. In a couple of these (I think that one is called "The Book of Night with Moon") there are wizards who are cats.

(I'm brand-new here and still haven't got a nickname!)

Diane Duane it is - I remember now. But I still love Diana Wynne Jones for A Sudden Wild Magic - just what feminist science fiction should be. As good as Naomi Mitchison.

How long have you been here on H2G2, oh one-seven-two-seven-three-nine? (And thinking up a name is the very dickens, but you can change it, and people frequently do change their suffixes if not their names).

I was only here about two hours when I posted that message to you - Diana Wynne Jones is one of my favourite authors so this conversation was one of the first that I looked at. I have been very decisive for me and thought up a nickname overnight. I have only recently read any of Diane Duane's books, "A Wizard Abroad" which is set in the are of County Wicklow where I live, and which I really enjoyed. I'm on the look-out now for other Duane books.

For Gnomon, about the article, I think it would be a good idea to give the publication dates of the books that you list. Diana Wynne Jones' style has changed over the years, and the dates can help people choose which books are most similar to the ones they like.
