These are in general, a *good thing* - when you finally start earning some money, you still have access to cheap beer and familiar surroundings. I've been a Life Member of the Robert Gordon's University Union (previously the Robert Gordon's Institute of Technology Student Association) for about fifteen years, and have saved far more than the cost of my life membership on stationery alone over that period!
