Anybody see the documentary/interview programme about this last week?
It interviewed some of the survivors, had computer-generated recreation of how it all happened.
A superb programme - brought tears to my eyes.

Apparently the problem was that caused by the Coal Board tipping onto a stream. This was soaked up by the tipped "slag" and therefore created the slide.
