Thanks for the suggestions of employment - nice that you care - but I'm fine
I'm about set out on a 10,000-mile horseback ride. The details are at:
http://www.goldfinch-equestrian.co.uk/nickspage.htm
Also, our 'conversation' got me thinking, and since I've got a bit of time on my hands at the moment, I decided to write a Guide Entry about selection.
It's called 'Passing the SAS Selection Course - Myth and Reality'. You can find it at:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel/A12936765
I've put it in for 'peer review', so if you want to go to that section and read it there, you could comment on it!
And take care yourself. My Dad was a surgeon - tough trade, so good luck.

No worries - you take care. Can't see myself as a top flight soldier though, I like some creature comforts too much.

You could always apply for the Royal Marines Cammando.

Sorry for the delay in response - just come back from hols. I hope that was a joke about the Marine Commandos.
Also I am a British citizen (born + lived here for 30yrs), but my parents are Indian, so I'm well tanned......I don't think I'd get on well in the armed services, especially the Marines .

stuart - there is a pre selection fitness test that must be completed in order to be accepted. This is called the SAS Briefing course which consists of a full week of physical tests similar to the ones on selection itself. I know this coz i've just done it myself!

I have studied various sources about the SAS, but I haven't been able to find what medical history you need to attempt Selection. I've heard that you can't have had asthma problems for four years, can anyone confirm that? Thanks.

sorry mate- dunno, but can say that sadly is for life, not just for xmas. You may not get a flare up for a while- but you are always susceptible to it.
Anyways, with the new series of Spooks starting, i wonder how does one get recruited?

Well, I think it was 'not being affected by asthma within 4 years'. Chances are still pretty low, thanks anyway mate.

Just saw Ultimate Force............where the heck do they get their research from...........it's hardly entertainment + I'm not sure any of it is feasible. Bring back Soldier Soldier.......at least that was semi- digestable.

I guess they look at your medical records.
I've filled in British army Medical forms for hopeful applicants and there is a section on chronic diseases, such as Asthma, eczema, diabetes, etc. I also remember a psychological question, about prior depressive illness. Pretty tough really!!!

I don't know much about weapons, but I assume with small fore-arms its ok- but a rifle would be tricky!!!

How come the States has more Special Forces than the UK (proportion wise)- they have Rangers, Delta force, Navy Seals, and probably other units.
Does the Unit (TV programme) have any bearing on the SAS, or are they similar. I think they are based on Delta force (US special Forces)
