....is the little known name of the composer of "Entrance of the gladiators" slight correction in title that I hope you will accept. Great entry tho, is there another entry somewhere on wigan casino somewhere?

There's an entry on Wigan Pier here
http://www.h2g2.com/A441866, but nothing in the guide on the casino or northern soul. Nothing of much use on yahoo either, but that's not saying much. What was the casino is now a crappy nitespot, that changes hands regularly and at one point had poor cartoons painted outside.

Zamiroop, hopefully Ashley (one of the h2g2 editors) will correct the Gladiator thing when he gets to work and checks the threads tomorrow morning

Where actually is the Wigan Casino? My folks have been rattling on about it for years " It were Bloody great that place were....", but I never asked where it was. I must have been to its reincarnations many times though.
Cant believe the article didnt mention Pemps, the most original club in North England. apart from that, it were beltin.

"entrance/entry" may be a translation thing, tho my main point is the composer should be credited, especially with a name like that! Don't know what nationality he was tho (I'm assuming he was a he!)

Do-it-yourself Pemps
1) Take a garage
2) Set it on fire
3) Put it out with an axe
4) Grab a granny ( or more likely, get grabbed by a granny )
Other features you'll need:-
The Market: Perch a couple of ghetto-blasters at head height to knock out anyone who can actually dance
The Budgie Corner: place large mirrors on each wall, just need a bell and millet to complete the picture. Those sufficently intoxicated think "Wahey! I've pulled" as they dance with their reflection
The Avenue: a place to cool off, chill out, or freeze to death during the winter months.
The Bogs: no, the less said the better. Ignore the signs indicating Male and Female, it's impossible to tell who's what where anyway.
This place is a must see to believe - it's so awful you'll just have to go visit again and again.

Spot on! Dont forget the music and the food
The Music: Find the least able DJ in the UK, remove his ability to communicate, give him 7 records, and insist he visits the toilet just before the record finishes.
The Food: Recommended to those who desire a week off work.
Good work fella!

Seeing as this is going back to a bit more about wigan I shall Be unsubscribing from this thread but before I go I'd suggest that the last few remarks about pemps should be put under a new conversation for this entry, as this one is about an obscure composer!
regards to all!

thanks for all the comments chaps, and i'll not be checking out pemps next time i'm back up wigan way. Did go to indie night at the pier on wednesday after xmas, and was pleased to note that the playlist is largely unchanged and the dancefloor just as sticky.
The casino i think is opposite uncle joes, by wigan wallgate, but i'm not entirely sure. apologies for the ignorance - does anyone else know???

Pemps is such an exclusive place Miss Purple, that one canot choose to check it out. Rather, the would be guest is checked out by Pemps. The rules for membership are as follows;
1) Is Barbara in a good mood.
You really should try it though. It knocks Wigan Pier into a cocked hat. Unfortunately, I live 8000 miles away though.

Purplejenny:
Wigan Casino (RIP) was on Station Rd. Starting from Woolworths (as was), you walked down past the ABC cinema (as was) on the left and Starburst (as was) on the right. Carrying on past all the bus stops where the bus inspector would blow his whistle every night at 11pm to set the last buses on there way... Where there is now (I think) a carpark and some portacabins, opposite a multistorey carpark at the bottom of Stairgate stood the hub of Northern Soul. Until about 1982.

Thanks Hoovooloo. I'll possibly be back there briefly this Christmas, so will check it out. I think I'll maintain my policy of not going to Pemps, ever, thanks very much.
