They didn't have the cute name then, but in the 1987 film, Broadcast News ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092699/ ), a major plot point turns on a well crafted noddy.
A renowned, award winning broadcast journalist (William Hurt) is caught by his idealistic producer (Holly Hunter) lying about his use of post interview reverses showing him crying a single tear in an interview that won him his latest award.
I highly recommend this film (7 Oscar noms).
