A Conversation for Trumpets
Canadian Brass

Having never taken music lessons as a child, I always thought the only instruments worth playing were what the rockers played - guitars mainly. As the Dire Straits song says, any trumpet playing band is not rock and roll . But then I grew out of that and started listening to all the great music out there - Bach, Stravinsky, even Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.
And especially the Canadian Brass. What a great show they put on, sold out here in Houston. Of course a lot of the fun is the onstage antics, but all the reviewers say its world class playing, not just clowning. I've got a video of "All That Bach" which is a documentary on the Canadian celebration of Bach's 300th birthday. The Canadian Brass does a swing version of a Bach Fugue that is amazing. They explain that they did not change a note, just used a swing eighths feel - oh, and added a short soft shoe near the end. I think JSB would have loved it.
