I am originally from Margate, NJ. I am old enough to remember when Lucy "walked" a few blocks from her original site to where she stands now. It was quite an operation to jack up a crumbing 65-foot wooden elephant and put it into a cart to move down the street.
Lucy has been restored (and restored and restored). Kids love her and more than one drunk walking up the beach at night has been started by the sight or Lucy peeking at him over the lower buildings.
There's not much to see in Margate except the beach... and Lucy.

I was once one of those drunks!
It's shocking and rather tacky, but in the same sense amazing that a giant elephant should exist *anywhere* in the world, let alone Margate.
