This informative article reminded me, for some reason, that although France has always had such a proactive view towards standardised and exactly defined units of measurements the Yard can still be found on french golf courses.

Well, there are exceptions everywhere for special purposes. A golf player has not idea about a "100 metres hole". The same thing is true for air traffic, even on a legal basis: everyone uses feet. I remember an airplane accident over India because the Russian airplane was equipped with metric instruments.
