Talking Point: Are Recent Weather Extremes Caused by Global Warming?

During the last few weeks, Western Europe has experienced some of the worst storms for years. Currently many parts of the UK are severely flooded, and worse weather conditions are forecast for the next few days.

With a sense of nostalgia, people are looking back to sunny days past and are wondering if things used to be this bad. Are these weather extremes, of biblical proportions, caused by global warming and the burning of fossil fuels? Or can they be attributed to something altogether more benign, like the natural ebb and flow of weather patterns?

  • Prince Charles said recently, 'Some recent occurrences in our country are, I have no doubt, the consequences of mankind's arrogant disregard of the delicate balance of nature'. Do you agree with him?

  • Can recent worldwide weather extremes be laid firmly at the door of global warming? Or are the current weather extremes just cyclical natural events?

  • Do you live in a region of the UK that has suffered during the recent floods? Or did you experience the recent USA hurricanes first-hand? Wherever you live in the world, if you've experienced extreme weather conditions, tell us all about it. How did the conditions really affect you, your family and your local community?
