What about stems?

About the method of picking of the leaves: what about green stems? They also are responsible for photosynthesis, so the energy that you "remove" by picking of the leaves, gets "refilled" a bit every day.
But I suppose, on a netto basis, the amount of energy decreases?

hmm, I was under the impression that it only occurred in the leaves - biology lessons were a long time ago for me! The entry I linked to doesn't seem to make it clear, so I'll believe you. The Gardener's World gardeners do recommend the same treatment though, and they have a lot more experience than I do, so it must work more often than not.

With plants, basicly, if it's green, it photosynthesises. However, the stems only contain a small amount of stomata (mouthlike structures), so they can't take in a whole lot of carbon dioxyde, needed for photosynthesis.

In that case I shouldn't think it would make much difference. I've killed off a rhubarb plant by keep picking it - although I'm picking the stems as well in that case.
